When the First Edition of this book was written in 1951, the gas turbine was just becoming established as a powerplant for military aircraft. It took another decade before the gas turbine was introduced to civil aircraft, and this market developed so rapidly that the passenger liner was rendered obsolete. Other markets like naval propulsion, pipeline compression and electrical power applications grew steadily. In recent years the gas turbine, in combination with the steam turbine, has played an ever-increasing role in power generation.

Despite the rapid advances in both output and efficiency, the basic theory of the gas turbine has remained unchanged. The layout of this new edition is broadly similar to the original, but greatly expanded and updated, comprising an outline of the basic theory, aerodynamic design of individual components, and the prediction of off-design performance. The addition of a chapter devoted to the mechanical design of gas turbines greatly enhances the scope of the book.

THE AUTHORS
Herb Saravanamuttoo, Professor Emeritus, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, has many years experience in the gas turbine industry on both sides of the Atlantic, and is a Past President of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.

The late Gordon Rogers was Professor Emeritus of Engineering Thermodynamics at the University of Bristol. He was author, with YR Mayhew, of Engineering Thermodynamics Work and Heat Transfer, 4th edition.

The late Henry Cohen was formerly University Lecturer and Director of Studies in Engineering at Queens’ College, Cambridge.

Paul Straznicky is Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University and has many years of experience as a mechanical design engineer.

I picked up this book based on a recommendation in Charles Platt's Make:Electronics.Truly, this book is a gem. Although written in 1974, it is still relevant, useful and interesting. While TTLs aren't used much these days, anyone wanting to learn about electronics should familiarize themselves with TTL technology. And for that, there isn't a better book than this.It should be noted that this isn't an introductory book -- the target audience is a working engineer who already knows electronics. But if you've read Make:Electronics (and perhaps Make:More Electronics) and done the experiments, you should have no trouble with this book.

This book may be old, but it's still relevant. The material contained within makes this an excellent learning tool.While some of the information in here is a bit out of date, most of it is still valid today. The specifications for max operating frequencies given in this book are lower than the specifications for current day parts (big surprise), and a very small number of parts listed in here seem to be currently obsolete. The obsolete parts, for the most part, are predictable though. Most of the obsolete parts are for old technologies which are no longer used, like drivers for neon 7-segment displays and nixie tubes. A couple are for displaying information on a standard definition TV. The vast majority of the parts shown in this book, however, are still relevant today.This book provides good background information on the characteristics of the different types of logic chips, and how to use them. It also provides a healthy sampling of useful circuits which can be made from these chips. Additionally, the book provides you with needed information on how to design your circuits such that they'll behave as expected, and have reliability.In order to build good, truly reliable circuits, I recommend supplementing this book with "Circuit Designer's Companion." The, "CMOS Cookbook," also by Don Lancaster, is another great companion to this book. With all three books, one should be able to design very nice, reliable circuits which can perform some fairly sophisticated tasks.I highly recommend this book!

This is a classic work that should be on the shelf of every electronic design hobbyist or professional. 'Nuff said.

This is a classic book, which I used to use back in the day, and it's still relevant today. However, the print quality on this edition is terrible. It looks like it was run off of a low-quality photocopy instead of printed on a press. The pages are printed at a significant angle and are set higher than center. It's a shame the poor quality print detracts from a classic text.

I read this book when it was first published, and immediately was able to apply the lessons I learned. Lancaster writes clearly and succinctly, and makes it all very approachable. He also goes beyond the basics, and discusses the use of various logic functions in less than obvious applications. I loaned this book to my then boss, a relay logic guy, and he learned enough in one sitting to recognize a couple of minor errors.We're well past the days of TTL, but I recommend this volume without reservation, as I have not yet found a better introduction to logic design.

I used this book a lot back when I was doing TTL work a couple of decades ago. CMOS is seen to be an improvement over TTL and has mostly replaced it. But I recently got some TTL in a parts lot, and intend to use some, and this book is an excellent guide both to logic design in general and a reference to individual devices (which mainly have one page per device) as well.If you are planning to use TTL, get this book. It's the best I have ever seen on the subject.

About the Author
Vratislav Hurai obtained his master's degree in mineralogy, geochemistry and economic geology (1979), his PhD. (1989), and his Habilitation (2003) at Comenius University in Bratislava, where he worked in 1980-1994 and 2001-2006 in various full-time positions and till 2012 under part-time contracts. In 1994-2000, he joined the Laboratory of Isotope Geology at the Geological Survey of Slovak Republic in Bratislava. Since 2006, he is a senior researcher at the Geological Institute of Slovak Academy of Sciences, where he received his DrSc. degree in 2009. In 1990-1991 and 1996 he was a post-doctoral research fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Georg-August University of Göttingen in Germany. While being assistant and associate professor at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology of Comenius University, he taught courses on Isotope Geology, Genetic Mineralogy, Fluids in Geological Processes, Heavy and Accessory Minerals. Since his university studies, Hurai is engaged in the study of fluids in all geologic environments, including siderite, magnesite and polymetallic deposits, hydrocarbon prospects, deep mantle and crust, and high-grade metamorphic rocks. Hurai is author or co-author of 43 research articles published in impacted SCI journals.

Monika Huraiová received her master's degree in petrology (1989), her PhD. (2000), and her Habilitation (2004) at Comenius University in Bratislava, when she has been working at the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology up to present. She has been teaching courses on Optical Mineralogy, Fluid inclusion microthermometry, Applied Thermodynamics, Petrology of Magmatic Rocks, and Stable Isotopes. In 1998 she joined for 5 months the GeoforschungsZentrum in Potsdam, Germany, as a post-doctoral research fellow of the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst, where she worked together with R. Thomas on fluid and melt inclusions in xenoliths in alkali basalts.

Marek Slobodník received his master's degree (1981), PhD (1990) and habilitation (2001) at the Masaryk University in Brno, Czech republic. He spent 8 months at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven, Belgium, where he studied fluid flows in sedimentary basins within the scope of postdoctoral sholarship funded by a bilateral cultural agreement between Czech Republic and Belgium. Since 90’s he has been investigating fluids in various geological environments and mineral deposits of European Variscides. He applied fluid inclusion methods in investigation of provenance of rock and crystal artefacts with the focus on the Central European region in the last decade. He is currently a head of geofluid lab at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Masaryk University.

Rainer Thomas received his master's degree in mineralogy, his PhD., and his Habilitation at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology (Germany). He worked in the semiconductor industry from 1969 to 1988, where he carried out research on crystal growth by chemical transport reactions, developed polishing technologies for silicon wafers, and performed X-ray studies on crystals using single- and double-crystal topographic techniques and multiple-diffraction measurements. He was head of the X-ray fine structure laboratory for 15 years while in the semiconductor industry. Dr. Thomas began work as a research scientist in 1988 at the Central Institute of Physics of the Earth in Potsdam, and then joined the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam in 1992, where he remained until his retirement in 2007. Throughout his career, Dr. Thomas has studied all aspects of fluid and melt inclusions in minerals and has used Raman microspectrometry for the characterization of inclusions and other geomaterials. He is also recognized for developing a Raman spectroscopic method for measuring trace to major amounts of water in glasses and melt inclusions. A main focus of his research has been the genesis of pegmatites using melt and fluid inclusions. In 2009, he was awarded the Hawley medal from the Mineralogical Association of Canada as co-author of a research article published in the Canadian Journal of Mineralogy. Thomas is author or co-author of more than 80 articles published in impacted SCI journals.

A complex part of Helen's healing process is repairing her relationship with her overbearing mother, Cecilia, who, though she mourns her husband inconsolably, eventually finds new direction in her life. Helen discovers real love in the patient and humorous veterinarian, Tom, and she learns enough about real friendship to hold onto her loyal, true buddies Lizzy, Luke and Tina, saving the latter's life in the process. As she stumbles from one crisis to another, Helen is always likable, even if the decisions she makes often make the reader want to give her a good shake. Although the narrative tackles many issues, from the loss of a parent to the horrors of domestic violence, Maxted's bouncy, upbeat tone never falters. Revealing a touch for comic timing and versatility, she paints scenes of hilarious pratfalls, biting sarcasm and heart-wrenching pathos. While comparison between this work and Fielding's is unavoidable, Maxted's laugh-out-loud debut novel will come out ahead. (June)

She's reeling with grief at the sudden death of her father, and her stress is compounded by the neediness of her mother and grandmother. Helen has plenty more on her plate--she is being evicted from her apartment, she is trying to save a friend who is being abused by her fianc?, and her neurotic cat suffers a series of psychosomatic ailments. Behind the hilarious one-liners, there's a serious theme: it's tough for a young person to "be in charge" when a parent dies. Unfortunately, the appeal of this likable, if nonessential, novel will be limited in the United States by its many British colloquialisms. In addition, the book is far too long and loaded with slapstick scenes; its episodic content would have worked better as linked short stories. For larger collections.

We cannot know the man, Giorgio Vasari, but we can know about how Vasari as a man of his period formed and formulated his ideals and how they were expressed in his painting and writing. The Renaissance notion of history as an exemplary and rhetorical art is discussed in subsequent chapters, which also define the biographical structure Vasari adopted and describe its articulation in a specific and highly nuanced vocabulary.
